It’s 1958, and Faith and her family are leaving from Wales for a new life in Canada. Faith cherishes a hope that the moon will come with her to the new country. Her big brother reassures her that when they get on the boat, he will ask the captain to tie the moon to the ship’s funnel. Faith agrees, but on board, when she doesn’t see the moon at night, she loses hope that the moon has come loose.

Based on a true story, I first heard it from the children’s mother at the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 in Halifax. This story was just after WW2 when a wave of immigrants reshaped urban Canada.

For 43 years Pier 21 was a gateway to Canada, with one million immigrants passing through from 1928 to 1971.

Proceeds from this book go to The Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21.

Reviews:

"The Moon’s Journey is a beautifully illustrated book, with a most poignant story. It is based on a true story of a family’s journey from Wales to Canada. The book certainly will impress younger readers with its warmth and optimistic tone."

The SHELF LIFE, February/March 2025

"Beryl Young gives a common feature to which all immigrants can relate. The sun and moon are forever present.
The Moon's Journey
includes a sweet brother-sister relationship that helps Faith persevere. By reconnecting with the moon in her new country, Faith gets the reassurance she needs that things would be okay."
